PAUSANIA, DIODORO E LO SLANCIO AGRIGENTINO

Elisabetta Dimauro

Abstract

Pausanias, Diodorus and the Akragantine expanse
According to Pausanias, the Akragantinoi dedicated an anathema at Olympia after a
victory over Motya; many scholars suppose a confusion by Pausanias, or by his sources,
between Μοτύη and Μότυον (Diod. XI 91). But Pausanias is here reporting his experience
and oral communication with the local exegetes, as he often does. A victory over
Motya might be, in fact, an achievement by Thrasydaios, Theron’ son. The circumstances
of this victory open the way to some remarks on the longue durée of the economic situation
at Akragas, basis for civic consensus.
