ARCHEOLOGIA URBANA A CROTONE: I POZZI BALZANO DI VIA CUTRO

Abstract

Urban archaeology in Croton: the wells of Via Cutro
Archaeological research in Croton is mainly nourished by emergency interventions,
whose nature is dictated by the presence of the modern center, which stands directly on
the ancient one. Accordingly, dating what we know about the events that led to the
foundation, development and decline of the well–known Achaean colony, is the result of
research often characterized by unprogrammed excavations. In addition, these emergency
interventions are increasingly shorter due to the growing impact of the building activities
in the city. This contribution is intended to be a conclusive report of what was found
during the investigations carried out between May and July 2004 in one of the suburban
sectors of the modern center. The construction of three buildings offered the opportunity
to carry out in–depth research on the area, which, from the most superficial layers, has
delivered traces related to the Greek phase of the ancient city.
