Autorappresentazione e considerazione sociale degli insegnanti nella società romana tra Repubblica e Principato: fonti letterarie vs iscrizioni latine
Abstract
The figure of the teacher in ancient Rome at the elementary and intermediate levels (paedagogus,
ludi magister, grammaticus) is often portrayed negatively by authors, who emphasize violent educational
methods and immoral behavior. Without denying some truth to these accounts, this paper
aims to highlight and compare the elements that emerge about these figures in their epitaphs, considering
the issue from a broader and more comprehensive perspective.
Keywords: grammaticus, ludi magister, paedagogus, Roman education.
