Perpetuus nei Fasti di Privernum e nelle Res Gestae Divi Augusti. Epigrafia e filologia delle istituzioni politiche romane

Orazio Licandro

Abstract

The Fasti of Privernum permit the meaning of the adjective perpetua in the last dictatorship attributed
to Caesar to be corrected. The comparison with the Res Gestae Divi Augusti is of particular
importance in this regard, as it would confirm that perpetuus/perpetua affixed to dictator/dictatura
does not mean ‘for life’ or ‘lifelong’, but rather the absence of a fixed time limit.

Keywords: Caesar; dictatura perpetua; res publica; Augustus; Res Gestae Divi Augusti.
