Nouvelle stèle à Saturne des environs de Vaga (Béja, en Tunisie)
Abstract
The god Saturn had always occupied a prominent place in the religious cults of the Romano-Africans.
A stele placed in a guest house not far from Vaga (now Béja, in northwestern Tunisia) includes,
in a Graeco-Roman architectural setting, the scene of a faithful carrying in his arms the
victim to be sacrificed. On either side, the stele is decorated with the cornucopia, the astral symbol
and other attributes closely related to the cult of Saturnus. The dedication, which can be dated
between the end of the second and the beginning of the third century AD, was executed by a devotee
whose origin seems to be African.
Keywords: Saturnus, Vaga, Sacrifice, Belalis Maior, El Afareg.
