Reimpiego e rifunzionalizzazione del supporto epigrafico: un esempio da Didyma

Marta Fogagnolo

Abstract

The paper aims to investigate the relationship between two texts inscribed on an opisthographic marble
plaque from Didyma in the light of a broader investigation on the reuse of supports conducted
on the epigraphic heritage of the famous microasiatic shrine. On the recto of the support is inscribed
I.Didyma 375, an honorary inscription for a hydrophora; on the verso is I.Didyma 277, an honorary
inscription for a prophetes. A prosopographical analysis leads to the conclusion that the two honoured
people belonged to the same family, the Ulpiani/Graniani family, which could have been primarily
responsible for the reuse and refunctionalisation of the plaque, mainly for economic reasons, since
honorary inscriptions for religious offices in Didyma are often the result of private initiative.

Keywords: reuse, Didyma, opisthographic inscriptions, hydrophorai, prophetai.
