L’epigrafe del sarcofago «anepigrafo» del convento dei Serviti di Mendrisio (Ticino, Svizzera)
Abstract
The application of the Morphological Residual Model (MRM) to a photogrammetric survey of
the sarcophagus found in the cloister of the Serviti convent in Mendrisio – so far considered anepigraphic
– has enabled the reading of an inscription that could not be identified using traditional
survey methods. The study provides new evidence of a clarissimus vir from the Antonine to
Severan period. In addition to the record of the municipal magistracies held by the deceased, presumably
in Comum, the inscription documents a case of adlectio of a member of the municipal
elite into the amplissimus ordo.
Keywords: Morphological Residual Model (MRM), viri clarissimi, adlectio, Monolithic Sarcophagi of Roman Imperial Period, Digital Survey Techniques.
