Augusto, Perugia e CIL XI 1923: dall’evocatio alla restitutio
Abstract
Thanks to a re-examination of the sources (Appian, Cassius Dio, Suetonius), the A. recalls and
examines the episodes of religious content in the Bellum Perusinum: from the evocatio of Uni-Iuno
(whose statue was moved to Rome after a dream made by Octavian), to the temporary placing of
the already destroyed city under the protection of Vulcan (whose temple remained intact), up to
the Augustan restitutio attested by the arae of CIL XI 1923. Then, the restitutio of Augusta Perusia
is considered in religious terms and associated with the restitutio of Carthage, as they are chronologically
close. Carthage was equally deprived of the protection of Iuno Caelestis, due to evocatio.
Moreover, this city was razed to the ground and interdicted due to devotio and it was possible to
refound it only after the celebration of special rituals (Tert., pall., 1, 2), as probably also happened
in the case of Veii (Municipium Augustum Veiens).
Keywords: Bellum Perusinum, Augustus, evocatio, devotio, restitutio, Carthage.
