Le iscrizioni latine urbanae del Museo Maffeiano (CIL V 429*, 1-160; 234): giudizio autoptico di Mommsen e ricostruzione delle provenienze

Ludovico Bevilacqua

Abstract

This article is focused on the Latin inscriptions of the Maffeiano Lapidary Museum of Verona which
came from Rome and were recognised by Theodor Mommsen in CIL V 429*. After a brief analysis
of Scipione Maffei collection’s contribution to the history of epigraphic studies, the research recovers
the bibliography of the inscriptions of the Museum which came from Rome and allows to
judge Mommsen’s precision when he identified the provenance of those inscribed remains which
at the time had no known written evidence before their transfer to Verona. Furthermore, by reconstructing
the urbanae inscriptions’ life cycles the article divides them into groups according
to their common provenance, analysing Maffei’s main channels to acquire inscriptions at Rome
in the first half of the XVIII century, in view of further studies.

Keywords: Lapidary Museum, Maffei, Mommsen, Rome, urbanae inscriptions.
