Aesculapium argenteum libris quinque et semis Aquis Aptuccensium. La question des statues en métaux en Afrique romaine reconsidérée
Abstract
The rediscovery and rereading of a dedication to Aesculapius from Aptucca, in Africa Proconsularis
(Hammam Biadha, Tunisia) in the epigraphic reserves of Musti, has given us the opportunity to
reopen the file of metal statues in Roman Africa and to propose new interpretations of them. As
in the other provinces of the Empire, the vast majority of statues in North Africa were carved (or
more likely plated ?) in bronze, silver, copper and gold. Similarly, we have provided some elements
concerning their weights and prices.
Keywords: Aesculapius, Aptucca, Roman Africa, Metal Statues.
