Tra archeologia e numismatica: un frammento di lucerna africana con impronte monetali di Teodosio II da Cava Ispica

Giuseppe Guzzetta

Abstract

This paper deals with a fragment of an African red slip ware oil lamp with the impressions of
the two sides of a Theodosius II solidus, which was found near the Church of Saint Pancrati at Cava Ispica in
2012. First of all the types of this gold coin and the dating of its issue are discussed. Reference is then made
to the material evidence known so far of African red slip ware lamps with coin impressions of Theodosius II;
this is followed by comments on some chronological facts and the question of the workshops where these
artefacts were produced. Finally, the historical antecedents of ceramic products with monetary decorations
are discussed.

Keywords: Theodosius II, oil lamp, Cava Ispica, monetary decorations, African red slip ware.
