Le fortifications du secteur de la porte V à Akragas: un renouvellement des données

Sébastien Corniot

Abstract

This article presents a two-year research project as part of a Master’s dissertation from the
collaboration between il Parco Archeologico della Valle dei Templi Agrigento and the Bordeaux Montaigne
University. The paper is entitled “Research on defensive architecture in Ancient Sicily: the Gate V area in
Akragas”. This project took place under the supervision of Laurence Cavalier and Jacques des Courtils and
was defended in November 2021.
This dissertation discusses the Gate V and its defensive plan. Particular attention is paid to the terrace-bastion,
for which a comparison with the Illyrian world is underlined. In addition to this, there will be an analysis
of the structures along the western rampart: a tower, a staircase, and a probable postern. Based on in situ
observations, the following hypothesis can be put forward : the presence of a wall walk made of materials
perishable.

Keywords: Ancient military architecture, Akragas, Gate V, greek fortifications.
