Monete di Tylissos, Creta. Qualche riflessione
Abstract
After a brief examination of the history of excavations at Tylissos, along with a review of the
historical and archaeological data available for the Archaic and Classical city, the contribution examines the
monetary issues of the polis, collected and organized in a catalogue. Along with the scarce archaeological data
and the historical and epigraphic documentation, the coins constitute one of the few evidences of the life of
Tylissos in the 4th century BC, showing weight choices similar to those generally diffused in Crete in the
same period, and iconographic and typological choices that seem to imply relations – already attested by epigraphic
data, at least during the 5th century BC – with the nearby polis of Knossos and with the city of Argos.
Keywords: Tylissos, Crete, Hazzidakis, Knossos, Argos.
