Tra cinofilia e arte venatoria: il cirneco nella monetazione siciliana

Giovanni D’Elia

Abstract

A bronze coin from Segesta – found during the excavation campaign conducted in 2015 within
the area of the sanctuary of Sant’Anna in Agrigento – datable to the 5th century B.C. and bearing the image of
the Cyrnecus offers the cue for a wide-ranging historical, archaeological, social and cultural reflection on a
type that was quite widespread on the island in the Classical period, both in the Elymian centres of western
Sicily and in the Siculan centres of eastern Sicily.

Keywords: hunting, numismatics, Sicilian cities, society, culture.
