The Traianeum and the urbanism of Italica

Luisa Alarcon, Francisco Montero-Fernandez

Abstract

Our knowledge of reality depends on our choice of scale. A blind person will recognise
objects and faces with his or her hands, but to move through space will chose a different
instrument, a cane. The creation of knowledge requires the choice of specifics tools that
are dictated by scale. Archaeological research also requires us to engage with realities on
different levels, from the smaller scale that enables the study of objects to the larger scale
that provides us with a sense of territorial setting from a temporal perspective.
