EL TRASFONDO SECUENCIAL Y CRONOLÓGICO DE LA PRIMERA EXPANSIÓN FENICIA A OCCIDENTE

Abstract

Abstract
The date of the first contact between oriental sailors and the societies of central and western Mediterranean
represents an exciting phenomenon given its consequences for those territories. However, it is also a subject open to controversy given the distance among the stand-points from which the evidence is analyzed.
This contribution analyzes the available sources of information: written sources and their historical context;
archaeological evidence, particularly that produced by recent excavations in Huelva; and 14C determinations
provided by both Huelva and some key sites in the Levant. The aim is to bring some order to those sources, by putting them at the same level of analysis, and to discern which option or options seem to be most coherent in order to achieve a sound conclusion.
As a result, it seems that the evidence as a whole points to the central decades or the third quarter of the 9th
century BC for that initial contact between the peoples from Huelva and the Levant.

Resumen
La fecha del primer contacto entre los navegantes orientales y las sociedades del Mediterráneo central y occidental
es un fenómeno apasionante por lo que significó para todos estos territorios. No obstante, también es
un aspecto cuyo análisis está abierto a controversia dada la distancia entre los puntos de vista con los que la
evidencia disponible es analizada.
En la presente contribución se hace un análisis, no exhaustivo, de las fuentes de información disponibles: fuentes escritas y contexto histórico; evidencia arqueológica, en particular la proporcionada por las recientes excavaciones en Huelva; y fechas de Carbono 14 proporcionadas tanto por este último yacimiento como por otros orientales.
El objetivo es ordenar dichas fuentes de información, todas ellas puestas en un mismo nivel de análisis, y
discernir cuál es la opción u opciones más coherentes para alcanzar una conclusión.
El resultado es que la evidencia en su conjunto, una vez ordenada y contextualizada, parece apuntar a las décadas centrales o del tercer cuarto del siglo IX a.C. para la llegada de navegantes orientales a las costas de Huelva.
