MALAKA Y LOS LÍMITES OCCIDENTALES DE LA INFLUENCIA CARTAGINESA EN IBERIA ANTERIOR A LOS BARCA

Within the long discussion about the possible direct intervention of Carthage in the Far West, and more specifically in the Iberian Peninsula (and the Balearic Islands) before 237 BC, we analyzed the role played by the Phoenician cities at the south of the peninsula, and in particular Malaka and its area of influence. We try to
contrast the different archaeological records, related with numismatics and amphorics, and we point out the
possibility that, if this presence came to occur, it should have been concentrated in the SE and the Levante of
Iberia. Except, perhaps, the case of Baria (Villaricos), since the Phoenician cities of the southern coast had to be limited to a growing political and economic influence of Carthage, in the framework of an unequal relationship.

Resumen
Dentro de la larga discusión sobre la posible intervención directa de Cartago en el Extremo Occidente y, en
concreto, en la Península Ibérica (y Baleares), con anterioridad al 237 a.C., nos ocupamos del papel jugado por las ciudades fenicias del sur peninsular, especialmente de Malaka y su área de influencia. Se intenta contrastar los diferentes registros arqueológicos, numismáticos y anfóricos, sobre todo, y se apunta la posibilidad de que, si esta presencia llegó a producirse, se debió concentrar en el SE y Levante de Iberia. Exceptuando, quizá, el caso de Baria (Villaricos), ya que las ciudades fenicias de la costa meridional debieron experimentar una creciente influencia política y económica de Cartago, en el marco de una relación desigual.
