ARCHEOLOGIA DELLA PALUDE: SISTEMI DI BONIFICA E MITI AMBIENTATI NELLE ZONE UMIDE

Giuseppe Lepore

Abstract

Wetlands are not necessarily unhealthy places to be avoided or reclaimed. In fact, the ancient world has a different
perception of these “unmappable” places, which are neither land nor water: they are “intermediate”, almost
magical landscapes that can connect different worlds and are very often the scene of myths and fantastic events.
In spite of this, with due ritual caution, the ancients also implemented important reclamation operations, which
archaeology is finally beginning to account for.

Key words: marsh, myth, polis, ritual.
