SANTUARI DELLE ACQUE FENICI E PUNICI: NOTE PRELIMINARI DI METROLOGIA

Giulia Congiu

Abstract

The intervention proposed here intends to investigate the linear units of measurement detectable from the study
of the already published documentation of sacred contexts related to water. The metrological approach, only
sporadically found in literature, is applied here to suggest new readings of known data. The analysis aims to verify
the possible permanence of metrological parameters for the construction of hydraulic structures and how these
parameters interact with the natural morphology of the places and the function of the installations in relation to
the needs of the temple. For this purpose, the extra-urban sanctuaries of Sidon and Amrit were considered and
compared with different architectural solutions located in the rest of the Phoenician and Punic Mediterranean,
focusing on Sardinia and Sicily.

Key words: metrology, temples, hydraulic structures.
