EVIDENCE OF EARLY NEW KINGDOM FUNERARY ACTIVITIES AT EL-LAHUN (FAYUM, EGYPT): THE CASE OF “BURIAL 5”

Valentina Gasperini

Abstract

This paper discusses 18th Dynasty ceramic materials and small finds excavated by W.M.F. Petrie at el-Lahun
(Fayum, Egypt), at the beginning of the last century. All these materials are currently curated at the Ashmolean
Museum (Oxford) and were only partially published in 1923. While the el-Lahun archaeological area is better
known for its Middle Kingdom funerary and domestic activities, the analysis of the early New Kingdom materials
sheds new light on the usage of this area during the 18th Dynasty.

Key words: New Kingdom, Fayum, el-Lahun, 18th Dynasty Egyptian and imported ceramics.
