HERMES E LA TARTARUGA

Abstract

In the scene portrayed in two scarabs from Th arros (VI-V sec. B.C.) a male character kills a turtle. Th e theme
gives us the opportunity to refl ect about the complex symbolism of the turtle which in the ancient world, as
shown by a lot of archaeological records, was associated with female deities and was a symbol of fertility. Some
details can suggest that the killing of the turtle shown on scarabs has a sacrifi cial meaning: according to this
interpretation, the scenes can represent a visual transposition of the lyre’s invention episode, as narrated in the Hymn to Hermes.

Nella scena illustrata in due scarabei da Th arros (VI-V sec. a.C.) un personaggio maschile uccide una tartaruga.
Il tema fornisce lo spunto per una rifl essione sul complesso simbolismo della tartaruga che, come mostra anche una ricca documentazione archeologica, nel mondo antico era associata a divinità femminili ed era simbolo di
fertilità. Alcuni dettagli portano ad attribuire all’uccisione della tartaruga sugli scarabei un signifi cato sacrifi
cale: secondo questa interpretazione le scene potrebbero rappresentare una trasposizione visiva dell’episodio
dell’invenzione della lira narrato nell’Inno ad Hermes.
