LA “CHAPELLE CINTAS” VUE DE LA VILLE À LA LUMIÈRE DES FOUILLES PRÉVENTIVES À CARTHAGE

Abstract
New stratigraphic sequences lying on the virgin soil, excavated in several points of the City gave us the opportunity
to reexamine, in a comparative approach, the remains of the so-called “Chapelle Cintas” located in the lowest level
of the “Tophet”, which has long been considered as a specific arrangement in the sanctuary. We come back, in this
article, on several components of the “Chapelle” in order to analyze and propose new readings of its stratigraphic
and topographic data. Questioning the previous hypotheses we argue that no connection did exist between the main
depositions and the upper structures and develop some considerations on the evolution scheme of the “Tophet”.

Résumé
La documentation de séquences stratigraphiques qui arrivent jusqu’au sol vierge en plusieurs endroits de la Cité
nous a permis de réexaminer, en une approche comparative, le dispositif connu sous l’appellation de “Chapelle
Cintas”, situé à l’étage inférieur du “Tophet”, longtemps considéré comme étant insolite dans le sanctuaire. Nous
revenons dans cet article, sur quelques éléments de cette “Chapelle” en analysant et en proposant une relecture de
ses données stratigraphiques et topographiques. En mettant en question les hypothèses antérieures, notamment son
caractère excentrique, nous proposons la déconnection définitive entre les principales dépositions et les structures
sus-jacentes et nous développons quelques réflexions sur le schéma évolutif du “Tophet” lui-même.
