FORME DI APPROVVIGIONAMENTO E USO DEL CORALLO NEL MEDITERRANEO CENTRALE PUNICO E ROMANO*

Abstract

Abstract
Coral finds seem to reflect a limited appreciation compared to other raw materials in the Punic and Roman
central Mediterranean area. From the “Early Punic II” period onwards, they – in the rough or worked state
– have been found in particular in funerary quarters, but also in sacred buildings – probably in connection
with the worship of specific deities –, living e craft contexts. Moreover, the limited information about supply
methods have led to observe the Mediterranean basin as a whole, with the aim of determining the spread and
development of the known techniques. The issues related to its correct identification have allowed to emphasize
the role of the archeometric analysis on the ancient coral, in order to define its chemical composition and obtain
a correct identification of the species. These data lead to reflect about where the exploited coral reefs were and
consider the possible exchanges of this product inside the Mediterranean basin.

Riassunto
I reperti in corallo sembrano testimoniare un limitato apprezzamento rispetto ad altre materie prime nel Mediterraneo
centrale punico e poi romano. Essi, dal periodo “punico arcaico II” in poi, sono stati rinvenuti, allo
stato grezzo o lavorato, in special modo in contesti funerari, ma anche santuariali – probabilmente in connessione
al culto di specifiche divinità – abitativi e produttivi. Inoltre, le scarse informazioni circa le modalità
di approvvigionamento hanno portato a osservare l’intero bacino mediterraneo, con lo scopo di determinare
la diffusione e l’evoluzione delle tecniche note. Le problematiche connesse alla corretta identificazione hanno
permesso di sottolineare il ruolo delle analisi archeometriche sul corallo antico per definire la sua composizione
chimica e giungere a una corretta determinazione delle specie. Questi dati portano a riflettere su dove fossero
i banchi corallini frequentati e a valutare i possibili scambi del prodotto all’interno del bacino mediterraneo.
