Abstract
This paper is dedicated to the study, through the epigraphic data, of the forms assumed by the cult of Melqart in
the Phoenician West. The main goal is to trying to reconstruct some functions of the deity within but also outside
the portrait forged by classical literary sources, which describe the god, as is well known, as the protector of the
colonies and colonists, giving him this role in relation with the very early stages of the Phoenician presence in
the western Mediterranean.

Riassunto
Il presente contributo è dedicato allo studio, attraverso la documentazione epigrafica, delle forme assunte dal
culto di Melqart nell’Occidente fenicio. L’obiettivo è quello di provare a ricostruire alcune delle funzioni della divinità
entro ma anche al di fuori del ritratto forgiato dalle fonti letterarie classiche, che, come è noto, descrivono
il dio quale protettore delle colonie e dei coloni, attribuendogli un simile ruolo già in relazione alle primissime
fasi della presenza fenicia nel Mediterraneo occidentale.
