Due pannelli con scena di banchetto a Palazzo Giustiniani. Un rilievo votivo greco e un sarcofago romano a confronto

Abstract

In the vestibule of Palazzo Giustiniani, at the entrance on via della Dogana vecchia, two panels with a banquet scene are walled up.
They are heavily restored with marble and stucco additions. The first is a Greek votive relief, of Attic production, in which a banqueter
with heroic attributes is represented, half-reclining on the kline, towards whom the cupbearer, a family of worshippers and an attendant
leading a ram are turning. In the second, belonging to a sarcophagus from an urban workshop, in front of the deceased couple there
are a seated musician, a flautist and a group of three attendants on two levels, while two children play with a dog in front of the lectus.
This research has underlined the documentary and historical-archaeological importance of these two panels, which fully falling within
the categories of relevance, constitute a particularly significant testimony.
