Un colombario del suburbio sud-orientale di Ostia: dati archeologici, analisi degli aspetti decorativi e indagini antropologiche

Abstract

Thanks to archaeological excavations in the East suburb of roman Ostia, carried out especially in the second half of XX century for
community service, we know that different funerary buildings were built probably in the imperial age along the North side and on the
South side of the via Ostiensis (now via dei Romagnoli). This funerary area was a part of the great ancient necropolis of the South-East
suburb of the roman city. During recent archaeological researches a colombario, with other adjacent funerary structures, was found
along the via Ostiensis. This colombario had a very good conservation because anybody didn’t tamper with it in the past. Interesting
data about archaeology, topography, architectonical decoration emerged from this excavation of the funerary building and a hypothesis
was made for its appreciation and public fruition. Moreover, the anthropological study of buried and cremated subjects found in this
excavation, although limited only to field analyzes, has provided very interesting data which contribute to formulating reliable
hypotheses on the daily life conditions of individuals.
