La ricostruzione del contesto sociale attraverso lo studio delle iscrizioni

Ersilia D'Ambrosio

Abstract

The onomastic formulas of the deceased allow us to reconstruct the juridical condition and the social context of those who had
chosen the burial ground developed along the Via Ostiense from the I century BCE. Most of the deceased are of libertine condition,
often of foreign origin. They were people who worked in the productive and industrial activities connected with the nearby river port
or in the pozzolan quarries in the surrounding areas. The outlined situation mirrors the characteristics of the society represented by the
urban funerary inscriptions. It is congruent with the different types of occupation of the territory along the Via Ostiense, in the period
between the first century BCE and the first century AD.
