Abstract

Studies on the origin of the Palatine Tuff have shown that material from the Capitoline Hill was used for the foundations of the Temple of Capitoline
Jupiter. From the area of the south-eastern slopes of the Capitoline Hill, between the Carcer and the so-called porticus degli Dei Consenti, approximately m3
20,000 of Palatine Tuff would have been quarried. Studies of ancient sources and archaeological evidence show that quarrying activity followed the evolution
of the city of Rome since its foundation in the second half of the VIII century BCE and reached its greatest intensity in the second half of the VI
century BCE when Temple of Capitoline Jupiter was built.
