Palazzo Caffarelli in Campidoglio e il cd. Palazzetto Clementino: le fasi costruttive

Silvia Aglietti

Abstract

Studies on modern building in the Capitoline Hill identify the oldest Palazzo Caffarelli with the palazzetto known as ‘Clementino’, which Ascanio,
according to tradition, built in the second half of the 16th century on the site donated by Emperor Charles V. The small building, in fact, is in perfect
adherence and continuity with the northern wing of the Palazzo dei Conservatori. However, unpublished archival documents show that the palazzetto was
the last building to be annexed to the already existing Palazzo Caffarelli, thus forcing a reconsideration of the construction history of the north side of the
hill between the late 16th and mid - 17th century.
