Abstract


The essay investigates the references to Virgil in Augustine’s works.
The analysis of Virgilian references shows different attitude towards the poet from Mantua: on the one hand Augustine considers him
an authority on language, style and poetic technique, on the other
he challenges his philosophical and theological arguments with
polemical and apologetic aims.
