PAESAGGI MILITARI E CONTROLLO TERRITORIALE NELL’ALTA PIANURA VICENTINA IN ETÀ TARDOREPUBBLICANA

Andrea Raffaele Ghiotto, Jacopo Turchetto

Abstract

In today’s industrial area of Schio the remains of a Roman military camp (Roman Camp) were found, in a point where it would
have been possible to control the outlets to the plains of the Lèogra and Astico pre-Alpine valleys. The settlement remained in use
for a short period between the second half of the 2nd and the beginning of the 1st century B.C., at a time when western Venetia
was particularly exposed to insidious raids from the north. Some visibility analyses carried out in a GIS environment allowed us
to further investigate the usefulness of the defence system centred on the camp of the higher plain of Vicenza, together with some
nearby lookout points.
