IL PAESAGGIO FUNERARIO VICINO A ROMA. IL CASO DEL V E VI MIGLIO DELLA VIA APPIA
Abstract
This study delves into the evolution of a section of the via Appia, situated between the Urbs and the Alban Hills, as a burial
ground for the city’s inhabitants. This practice thrived from the 1st century BCE to the 4th century CE. Notably, there is a marked
surge in burial activity from the latter half of the 1st century BCE to the conclusion of the 2nd century CE. Although there’s
a scarcity of observed later burials, the influence of the Quintilii villa appears pivotal in catalyzing changes, both in the funerary
landscape itself and in the burgeoning commercial activities surrounding the tombs, particularly from the 2nd century onward.
