ARTIGIANI NELLE PERIFERIE URBANE NEL VENETO ROMANO: I CASI DI PADOVA E VERONA

Maria Stella Busana, Leonardo Bernardi

Abstract

The paper focuses on the “craft landscape” in the suburbs of the urban centres of the Roman Veneto by clarifying, in a diachronic
perspective, its typological, topographical and systemic characteristics. Padua and Verona, the two largest cities of the Roman
Veneto, constitute two very significant case studies; the large number of production evidence found and the knowledge of the
urban and suburban areas make it possible to reconstruct the production landscape that a traveller encountered when approaching
the two cities, capturing the dynamics between centre and periphery and the vital relationship between craft activities and the
peripheral itinerant network.

Keywords: Veneto Region, Roman age, urban suburbs, craft workshops, road and waterways network.
