LE PORTE DELLE CITTÀ ROMANE NELL’ITALIA CENTRALE ADRIATICA: METODI INVASIVI E NON INVASIVI

Frank Vermeulen

Abstract

Until recently the study of Roman town gates in central Adriatic Italy was essentially based on a combination of monument
analysis and limited excavation work, providing an interesting but limited overview of the variety of city entrances in this region.
Since the introduction of large scale non-invasive survey methods, however, the potential of integrating different methodologies
for the study of city entrances has been much enhanced, as some examples from several towns in central Marche (Potentia, Trea,
Septempeda) now clearly demonstrate.

Keywords: Roman, city gates, non-invasive prospection, excavation, typology.
