IBAM FORTE VIA FLAMINIA: ENTRER DANS ROME AVEC LUCULLUS, DOMITIEN, HONORIUS…

Vincent Jolivet

Abstract

Astract
For the traveller arriving in Rome by the via Flaminia, the approach and entrance to the city was marked not only by the passage
of its two defensive walls, but also by a series of monuments whose construction, from the Republican period until the fall of the
Empire, contributed to making this road, and then the via Lata, from the Porta Flaminia to the Campidoglio, the most spectacular
entrance to the city, closely linked to Augustus and his political legacy. The way in which the arrival in Rome was progressively
announced is studied here through three different historical periods: the first half of the 1st century B.C., the Flavian period and
the beginning of the 5th century A.D., while appear along the way the first monuments heralding the triumph of Christianity and
the end of the development of the pagan city.

Keywords: via Flaminia, via Lata, Campus Martius, borders, suburbium.
