GREEN/RED MODEL OF DICHROIC GLASS: SOME CONSIDERATIONS BASED ON THE CAGE CUP FROM TERMES (SPAIN)

Miguel Cisneros, Esperanza Ortiz, Juan A. Paz

Abstract

In the Roman period the expansion of the Latin term diatreta seems to have been linked
to the work of cutters, in any form, including the manufacturing technique probably
applied to stone beakers. The scientific word, however, is restricted to relief openwork
cutting, cage cups, and refers to a limited amount of luxury items of the highest technical,
artistic and technological accomplishment. Diatretarii may have drawn inspiration from
cameos, rock crystal lamps and vessels with high-relief decoration such as those made
of semi-precious stones. Some scholars thus consider the so-called Rubens vase a direct
model of the Lycurgus cup.
