L’ALTARE DEL TEMPIO DEL GENIUS AUGUSTI STRATEGIE DI RESTAURO E RICOSTRUZIONE NELLA POMPEI POST 62 D.C.

Abstract

This paper is part of a broad study aimed at the reconstruction of the restoration works carried out
on the public buildings in the Forum of Pompeii after the earthquake of 62 AD. A new assessment
of the controversial chronology of the altar preserved inside the Temple of Genius Augusti is discussed:
after a brief review of previous researches, a new typological classification and a new dating
for the reliefs and mouldings is proposed, based on the re-examination of the stylistic aspects
and technological details. The study of the monument offers also new insights into the practice of
reuse in Pompeii and, more generally, into the last building phase of the Forum.
