Abstract
The link between illusionism, natural magic and philosophy is studied here through the
writings of three major medieval scholars (William of Auvergne, Roger Bacon and Nicole
Oresme) as well as those of their contemporaries. Indeed, from the thirteenth century, illusionism
became an object of knowledge, integrated into scholarly discourse. This break
with the legacy of moral criticism opened up a new epistemological space and provided
natural philosophy with the means for a sceptical and naturalistic hermeneutic of magical
phenomena, fundamental to the theorisation of the concept of “natural magic”. This medieval
reflection is decisive in the constitution of the current paradigm of illusionism.

Résumé
Le lien de l’illusionnisme avec la magie naturelle et la philosophie est étudié ici à travers les
écrits de trois savants médiévaux majeurs (Guillaume d’Auvergne, Roger Bacon et Nicole
Oresme) ainsi que ceux de leurs contemporains. En effet, à partir du XIIIe siècle, l’illusionnisme
devient un objet de savoir, intégré au discours savant. Cette rupture avec l’héritage
de la critique morale ouvre un nouvel espace épistémologique et fournit à la philosophie
naturelle les moyens d’une herméneutique sceptique et naturaliste des phénomènes magiques,
fondamentale à la théorisation du concept de « magie naturelle ». Cette réflexion
médiévale est décisive dans la constitution du paradigme actuel de l’illusionnisme.
