Aspetti archeologici di due terremoti distruttivi nel Samnium

Abstract

Recognizing the traces of an ancient strong earthquake in the stratigraphy of an archaeological
excavation can prove to be fundamental to understanding the history
of a site. In fact, a seismic event can result in significant changes in the material and
social order. This contribution, through the analysis and comparison of archaeological
contexts affected by a destructive capacity earthquake, aims to highlight the reconstructive
choices, taking into account the economic, social and political implications.
To this end, two earthquakes were investigated, which in Roman times hit Central
Italy, in particular that part of the peninsula that constituted the region IV Samnium, a
highly vulnerable seismic area.
