Terra Sigillata Tardo Italica e Sud Gallica dall’antica Capua

Sergio Cascella

Abstract

This study examines some cups of the Late Italian Sigillata and South Gaulish Sigillata.
These vases were discovered many years ago during the excavations made at Santa
Maria Capua Vetere which corresponds to the ancient Capua, one of the largest Roman
cities in Campania and ancient Italy. These bowls, by the way they were found,
are not useful in increasing our knowledge about the history of these productions in
manufacturing sites, nor in increasing the statistical data on the quantities of circulating
pots in Campania. These vases, however, are very useful in increasing the knowledge
about chronology and distribution in Campania of this kind of pottery. They are useful
too in increasing our knowledge about the types of circulating shapes, the decorative
patterns and to know the main attested ceramists in this rich area of the ancient Italy.
Keywords: Terra Sigillata, Late Italian Sigillata, South Gaulish Sigillata, Capua
