Traces of Roman Sanctuaries and Cult Venerations along the Krka River

Abstract

After the founding of the Burnam legionary camp and the arrival of the Roman army,
the Krka river became a lifeline, through which Roman naves could sail deep into the
hinterland. A diverse population settled in this region, reflected in a diversity of cults.
Jupiter became a highly revered deity, along with Mars and Venus Victrix. Worship of
the regional imperial cult was organized in Scardona. Worship of the goddess Latra
was recorded by the prominent Scardonitan autochthonous family Turranii. Rivers
have always been crucial for the survival of mankind, a fact illustrated by the Krka
river. The worship of Neptune, god of the sea and rivers, at the Čavlinov buk crossing,
and Magna Mater, as a patroness of river sailing and trade, in the port section of Skardona
further support this thesis.
