Le mura Erice nel quadro delle cinte murarie della Sicilia di età arcaica

Salvatore De Vincenzo

Abstract

Stratigraphic investigations allow to date the first phase of the city walls of Eryx at the beginning of the 5th century BC. The large limestone blocks of the walls are rough-hewn and thus do not appear regular, even though the rows of stones on the inner side have been laid out to resemble opus quadratum. The analysis of the city walls of the Greek Poleis of Sicily shows that their city walls were mainly structured with squared blocks laid out in opus quadratum from the first half/middle of the 6th century BC.
