La cinta muraria di Himera, un aggiornamento

Stefano Vassallo

Abstract

The archaeological data on the Himera fortifications are still very limited and fragmentary. The physical characteristics of the colonial site, whose settlement extended partly over the coastal plain, partly over the hills above, probably determined different design and technical choices, in order to adapt the walls to the terrain of different nature and morphology. Currently we know of different stretches of wall, but only for the north/west fortification of the lower town have the investigations allowed a deeper knowledge of the type and construction techniques of the wall. This part of the fortification can be connected, on the basis of what Diodorus Siculus wrote, with the walls against which the Punic siege of Himera was concentrated during the battle of Himera in 480 and in 409 BC.
