La Graecia exotica, un equivalente dell a maior Graecia?

Mathilde Simon

Abstract

In the plautinian Menaechmi, one of the protagonist, describing a sea-journey, quotes the Graecia exotica, a word that indicates Magna or maior Graecia: this unique expression could be understand if we consider the historical background in which the play was written, and in the same time, its presupposed and some decades before written greek model, and also the aesthetics of Plautus’work. As a false transcription of ἐξωτικός, a word which occurs only later, the adjective exoticus defines probably a siciliot perspective on Magna Graecia, for a Roman
audience, and could refer to the wealthy productions of Magna Grecia, during the III century B.C.
