TURI NEL IV SECOLO? LE STASEIS TURIE NELLA POLITICA DI ARISTOTELE

Flavio Raviola

Abstract

The internal struggles in Thurii attested in Aristotle’s Politics are often dated to the 5th century
BC, and referred to a direct development of the foundation phase, and first consolidation,
of the colony, or put in connection with the inner repercussions of the Peloponnesian war and the alternation of power of pro-Athenian and pro-Spartan forces, and therefore dated to the final part of the 5th BC century itself.

However, there are clues that allow us to rethink the political evolution of Thurii and claim that it may be possible to attribute (at least as an alternative hypothesis) the transformation of its politeia into the oligarchic (and then again democratic) regime described by Aristotle to the full 4th century BC.
